Cabinet has given its approval for the establishment of a Stem Cell Research and Treatment Center to be located here in Antigua.
According to the Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst, a group of three from the United States, including two doctors and an entrepreneur came to Cabinet on Wednesday to provide more information on the proposed project.
He said that the group has committed to investing more than US$5 million to establish the treatment center and a laboratory on the island.
Stem cells are the body’s raw materials or cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Hurst said that these stem cells are extremely valuable as they can eliminate some cancers within the body.
He said that the group will be entering into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Government to utilize an existing building on Government’s land and to expand it to fit their needs. They would also mobilize additional resources and expertise in order to ensure that the project is a success.
