Man Accused of Arson Granted 50,000 Bail

The man accused of arson in the Mega Distributor fire was granted bail in the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

48yr old Leroy Butts of Lower Bishop Gates Street was arrested and charged on Tuesday after he was accused of unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to Mega Distributors Limited located on American Road and also the Larceny of a number of items belonging to the company.

Butts, who appeared before Magistrate Conliffe Clarke was granted bail in the sum of $50,000 and was ordered to pay a cash component of $4,500 with two Antiguan sureties.

Also as part of his bail conditions, he is to surrender his travel documents and report to the St. Johns Police Station on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 6am to 6pm.

The charges stem from a March 29th incident where a fire destroyed a portion of the storeroom, located on the second floor of the building, which housed a number of household items, to include toilet tissues, napkins, paper towels and dishwashing liquid.

The 48 yr old is also accused of stealing Four Hundred and Fifty-nine (459) bales of toilet tissues, Fifty (50) cases of vinegar, and a quantity of foam cups & lids valued at EC$20,998.83 from the company. It is alleged that sometime during the process of clearing the items from the port and transporting them to their destination, several of these items were reported missing.

This incident reportedly took place between the 1st and 23rd March, 2016.
