Telecoms Minister says Telecommunications Bill to reap tremendous benefits for consumers

Significant benefits are ahead for consumers with the passage of the new Telecommunications Bill.

That is according to the Telecoms Minister Melford Nicholas who said that the proposed Bill will provide consumers with good quality as well as cost effective broadband service.

He was at the time speaking at a public consultation on Monday.

Also giving details on the proposed Bill was the Telecommunication Consultant within the telecoms division Darrell Jackson who indicated broadband, which refers to any high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than traditional dial-up access, is indeed the driving force behind the Bill.

Meantime Director General of the OECS Dr Didacus Jules says if broadband is to play a fundamental role in Caribbean development, the region must start with a technological up-to- date regional vision of development.

Dr Jules was speaking at Public consultation on Monday at the Multi-Purpose Cultural Center organized to receive public feed-back on the proposed Telecommunications Bill to be tabled in Parliament.

He however stated that the Bill is just the beginning as although a solid framework is required, broadband is too much of a strategic pillar of development to be reduced to purely a matter of legislation.
