Christmas Holiday falls on Monday 26th December

In light of uncertainty among members of the public as to whether the government would observe the public holiday the following Monday as Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, the Government has clarified the issue.

According to the Labour Department, in accordance with CAP 354 “The Public Holidays Act”, Section 9, given that December 25, 2016 falls on a Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day public holidays will be observed on December 26 and 27, 2016, respectively.

The Department further indicated, given that January 1, 2017 falls on a Sunday, New Years day will be celebrated on the following Monday which shall be a public holiday.

The Labour Department is reminding Employers that employees who are scheduled to work on public holidays should be paid 250% of their basic rate per hour worked.
