Antigua and Barbuda gears up to welcome the inaugural visit of the Anthem of the Seas, one of the largest cruise ships in the world.
The Quantum class ship that is expected to bring 5,000 passengers to the island, as well as nearly 4,000 crew members will dock in Antigua tomorrow Friday.
In preparation for the ships’ arrival the government spent in the region of US$30 million dollars to dredge the harbor and to extend the pier at Heritage Quay to accommodate the vessel. According to Government Spokesperson Lionel Hurst the Ministry of Tourism has planned a number of activities following the ships’ arrival.
He said the first ceremony will occur on the ship at 11:00 am where the Governor General, the Prime Minister and his Cabinet, the members of the House and the Senate, diplomats and shipping agents, along with several invited guests, will hold a welcoming ceremony. The events on board will be beamed to an audience outside by way of a massive screen.
The second ceremony will commence at 2:00 pm and end at about 6:00 pm on the newly built pier. The afternoon will be filled with food and entertainment including several bands, a costumed troupe, an iron band and other entertainment.
Hurst said that the government is leaving no stones unturned in laying down the red carpet for the vessel and its passengers.
