The much anticipated Antigua & Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) relief will be held once again this year.

On Tuesday, Government announced that they will lower the standard 15% ABST by 10% thereby bringing the tax to 5% from Friday 15th to December 18th.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance Senator Lennox Weston said that the reduced tax will be applied to all goods by ABST registered businesses but not services.

“The ABST will be reduced from 15 per cent to 5 per cent. It will be on all material goods, so whether you are buying a sheet set or furniture, curtains, car or you are buying a fridge, carpet or tiles, this is the Government of Antigua & Barbuda giving back to the people to make sure their Christmas is special.”

Senator Weston, while giving the assurance that by Friday the 15th of this week all public servants will be paid, in order to take advantage of the ABST relief added that residents can also look for a=ward to early pay to begin the New Year.

“Now giving you your money early in December we now have to pay you early in January. So I am going to go on record to promise that you will be paid by the 20th of January next year, so that the pain of waiting lessens a little bit. That does not mean you should overspend and leave yourself hungry, because you are going to have to send your children back to school,” he added.

The annual tax reduction began in 2012 under the former administration as a two day ABST relief and was continued by the current government.
