Private Sector Businesses call for reduced Interest Rates

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Employer’s Federation Leslie Salmon has called on the government to reduce interest rates in order to make it easier for the private sector to do business in Antigua.

Salmon who was speaking during an interview on Sunday highlighted that the rates are high throughout the region and it serves as a hindrance for doing business.

Salmon further called on the government, unions and social partners to join forces to reduce the cost of doing business within Antigua and Barbuda in order to be competitive.

However in response to the call the Government’s Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst who was speaking on ZDK’s Your Views this morning said that there is not much that the government can do to reduce interest rates as it is a problem throughout the entire region.
