Teachers press for a review in salaries for 2017

With a new school year now in effect President of the Antigua & Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) Ashworth Azille says the union will be placing a new proposal before the government regarding working conditions and salaries.

Azille who was speaking during an interview this morning said that for the New Year an increase in salary for teachers is high on the union’s agenda as according to Azille the best teachers can only be retained if conditions are right.

Azille said that the value of educators in Antigua and Barbuda has grown tremendously over the years however their salaries do not reflect their worth.

He said that over the year’s additional burdens to include increases in the various consumption taxes, and as situations change so too must there be an opportunity for regular review of salaries to ensure that teacher’s salaries can in fact sustain them.
